First up is Waitrose. On the menu:
Spicy Jerk Chicken – 1.7 bites
Chicken Caesar Wrap – 2.1 bites
BLT – 2 bites
Sweet Potato Falafel with Hummus – 1.6 bites
The winner was the Jerk Chicken by far. I didn’t necessarily want the most innovative flavoured entry to win, I would have been equally satisfied with a classic BLT taking the biscuit. However. The flavours worked harmoniously, there was perfect moisture and the original bread was beyond fresh. To give it its full name, the Spicy Jerk Chicken Sandwich With Mango Salsa on Pepper & Chilli Bread, was the bad boy.
The loser was the BLT. Britain’s most popular sandwich in 2008. Where were you on this one Waitrose? Step up your game I say. The bacon verged on chewy plastic and the mayonnaise had slightly sodden the bread, thus damning the sandwich entirely. Definitely not terrible, but this is Waitrose we’re talking about.
The inbetweeners are Caesar and his mate Falafel. Quality but nothing worth writing home about.
