BRITISH SANDWICH WEEK
15th-21st May
On Kiss My Diet we will be celebrating one of Britain’s great institutions – the sandwich.
Named after the 4th Earl of Sandwich in 1762. He ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread so that his cards didn’t get greasy when eating meat and playing cribbage. Other gentleman continued asking for the ‘same as Sandwich’. Or so the rumour goes…
The sandwich market is now currently worth £2.8 billion in the UK alone. Each year we eat in excess of 11.5 billion sandwiches, some 3 billion made by a commercial industry that now employs over 330,000 people.
Northerners buy more than southerners and, unsurprisingly, London is the most expensive place to buy a sandwich at £1.83 versus a national average of £1.66.
So who makes the best? Who’s are the healthiest? Who keeps an ethical backbone in the process?
