Falafel King

The Arabic word فلافل or falāfil means ‘hot pepper’ or ‘something fluffy’. But falafel is in fact the Middle East’s answer to street or fast-food… It has become so popular that some McDonald’s now serve the McFalafel!

Don’t let that put you off.

‘Falafel King’ isn’t a chain that you can find everywhere so I’m making a general falafel point.

Maybe it’s not so good for you - deep fried chick peas – but if you’re going to have it then this is how much and how bad.

FK gets you a pita with about 4 or 5 mini falafel balls,  (a small ice-cream scoop for visuals) shredded lettuce, humous, tahini and chilli.  Each falafel ball is just over a quarter of a bite, so according to my maths the whole thing will hit about 2-2.5 bites. Not that bad!  In fact, I think there is something really wholesome and healthy about this meal.  If you choose right, the core ingredients are only chick-pea, sesame paste, salad and chilli.

You can make it yourself or find it in most vegetarian/vegan shops or stalls.  It’s something that I just couldn’t live without on a diet. Just avoid too much humous and sauces – if you are making it yourself then add tomatoes and watercress for extra greenery…

I make my own falafels from a mix and fry in a frying pan with a little fry light – makes them healthier. x
